Safety tips

Some simple things you can do to protect your mobile phone and gadgets.

Make a note of the IMEI/serial number

The IMEI number is your mobile phone’s unique 15-digit ID number. If your phone is ever lost or stolen, your airtime-provider will be able to use the IMEI number to put a block on any other calls from being made.

The easiest way to obtain it, is to enter *#06# on your mobile’s keypad – it will then be displayed on the screen. It can also be found on the phone’s purchase receipt or despatch note.

If you take out our Gadget Insurance, you will need to provide the serial number should you make a claim. This can normally be found on the item itself or the accompanying handbook/instruction manual.

Set up a security PIN

You can set your mobile phone so that a PIN number has to be entered each time it’s turned on. Please refer to your phone's handbook for instructions on setting up your PIN.

When you’re out and about

Keep your phone/gadget on you at all times, safely tucked away out of sight in a pocket. Don’t set it down on a shop counter or a table in a bar or restaurant as it only takes a second for someone to snatch it away.

Try to avoid walking and using your phone at the same time so that you’re alert to what’s going on around you.

And remember, it’s now illegal to use a mobile phone whilst driving unless you have an appropriate hands-free car kit or Bluetooth headset. Break this law and you could be hit with anything from a £60 fine and 3 points on your driving licence.

Register with Immobilise

Immobilise is a free online service where you can register the details of your mobile phone and gadgets. If your phone or gadgets are then lost or stolen, logging the incident on your Immobilise account will automatically add it to the UK National Police Stolen Property Database.
